Offshore Alert newsletter causes commotion in the Cayman Islands

Saturday, March 6, 2004

GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands: A report in the most recent KYC News publication, the monthly Offshore Alert, has been the topic of much discussion in the Cayman Islands this week because of a news article with regard to the Leader of Government Business, McKeeva Bush.

The article about Mr Bush derives from his being mentioned in court filings in a lawsuit in the Circuit Court of the 11th Judicial Circuit in and for Miami-Dade County, Florida between Ritz-Carlton Grand Cayman developer Michael Ryan and his companies and Richard E. Friend, who maintains he was one of the Senior Vice Presidents of the development. That case is still ongoing.

The article reports that on 10 February 2004, Mr Friend applied for leave to serve requests for the production of documents on several parties, including Michael Ryan and the Ryan Group.

One of the requests in the claim is for "All documents in your possession, custody or control that refer to, relate to, or reference McKeeva Bush, members of his immediate family or any company now or formerly controlled by Mr Bush or members of his immediate family, including without limitation Cambridge Real Estate Corporation Ltd and Windsor Development Ltd. Including without limitation all documents in your possession, custody or control that refer to, relate to, or reference payments or gifts to, and or services rendered to or for the benefit of McKeeva Bush, members of his immediate family, including without limitation Cambridge Real Estate Corporation Ltd and Windsor Development Ltd, and all documents relating to each voluntary extension of the of the pensions of any of the former employees of the former Holiday Inn formerly located on Seven Mile Beach, Grand Cayman." Cayman Net News is un-aware at this time whether leave for the request has been granted or not.

When contacted for comment concerning the Offshore Alert report, a representative of Mr Bush's ministry said that he would not be issuing a statement on the matter.
