Dominican PM wins party vote
Tuesday, March 2, 2004
ROSEAU, Dominica: Dominica's Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit received a vote of confidence in his leadership by trouncing challengers for the Dominica Labour Party's (DLP) top post at its delegates' conference in Grand Fond on Sunday.
Skerrit beat former DLP senator Griffin St. Hilaire 290 votes to 24 to capture the political leader post of the senior partner in a two-party ruling coalition administration in the eastern Dominica village.
St. Hilaire, an economist employed with the United Nations (UN) in Geneva, and Dominica's ambassador to the UN Crispin Gregoire failed to wrest the deputy leadership from Agriculture Minister Ambrose George.
After his resounding victory, PM Skerrit said his mission is to reposition the party to cater to the needs of the economic depressed islanders.
''I therefore want to reposition the party so that its ideology and vision of a prosperous, peaceful and progressive Dominica will resonate through every social activity in this nation,'' Skerrit told reporters.
Skerrit, a 31-year-old educator who replaced the late Dominican Prime Minister Pierre Charles in January, added that he wanted to see his people achieve excellence during his term as Dominican leader.
