Monday, February 23, 2004
PHILIPSBURG, St. Maarten: An archaeologist has arrived to examine 12 skeletons that were found at a construction site and believed to be slaves.
The skeletons were found between last weekend at a plot of land in Philipsburg, where a supermarket is building a parking lot.
Officials believe the remains were buried before the Dutch government abolished slavery in St. Maarten in 1847.
The find is significant because it is not common to find slave graveyards in the Caribbean, according to archaeologist Jay
Haviser.
