Schoolteacher crowned Miss Dominica

Sunday, February 22, 2004

ROSEAU, Dominica: High school teacher Elhanna Alexis was crowned Miss Dominica 2004 at the Festival City here on Friday night. Seven young ladies, aged 21-23, competed in four rounds for the Miss Dominica title.

They took part in Talent, Costume, Swimwear and Evening Wear (Elegance) rounds.

The 20-year-old Alexis, of Fond Cole, collected the Miss Amity award on her way to becoming the first woman to lift the prestigious title from that low-income community in the capital Roseau.

After her crowning the mathematics teacher and part-time model said to reporters: ''I would like to set a new standard for pageants even in the Caribbean.''

As part of her one-year reign Ms Alexis has earned the right to represent her island at regional queen contests, a pre-owned motorcar and other prizes.

Bank clerk Pepciline Marshall, 23, placed first-runner-up and copped the Miss Elegance and the Miss Photogenic prizes, while administrative assistant Donna Desiree, 21, came in the second runner-up spot after claiming the best in swimsuit award.

The other category winners were entrepreneur Jacqueline Joseph, 21, best in costume, and bank clerk Miranda Mitchell, 22, captured the best performing talent award.

Meanwhile, ten calypsonians challenge two-time king Davidson ''De Observer'' Victor for this year's Monarch crown at the same venue on Saturday night.

Among the hopefuls are former kings Scrunter and Hunter, along with contenders Mighty Checker, Ras Kelly, De Dice, De Bobb, Scratchie, Lord Karessah, newcomer De Boople' and the lone woman Diva Nyoka.
