BVI government committed to five-star hotel development

Friday, February 20, 2004

ROAD TOWN, BVI: British Virgin Islands Chief Minister Dr. Orlando Smith has reaffirmed that the Government is committed to a five-star hotel development in the BVI, as it will create numerous employment and economic opportunities locally.

Dr. Smith gave the assurance while addressing delegates at the Five-Star Hotel Development Forum on Thursday.

Speaking at the opening ceremony for the event, the Chief Minister asserted that Government's position on the development of a five-star hotel in the BVI, specifically on Tortola, is well known throughout the Territory.

Such an initiative, he said, is in keeping with a pledge Government has made to the people, as the Administration is currently seeking to encourage further resort and hotel development in the BVI.

The Chief Minister, whose portfolio includes tourism, financial services and development planning, said it is critical that Government speaks with a unified voice when seeking to attract and facilitate development in the Territory. He added that Government recognises the role the private sector plays in the continued development of the BVI.

He noted that more markets and products are being offered to visitors and, as such, superior quality service is required to continue attracting new and repeat customers.

Dr. Smith pointed out that hotel development addresses the needs of both the tourism and financial services sectors and can help to strengthen and widen the international business industry in the BVI.

He cautioned that, while the local economy is largely powered by the tourism and financial services industries, smart and strategic promotion can help these sectors develop in a way that is respectful of the environment, good for the society and beneficial for every family in the Territory.

Dr. Smith urged the gathering to consider the community concerns that must be overcome in attracting a five-star hotel, as well as the requirements, regulations and standards that such a development must meet.

The Town and Country Planning Department and the BVI Tourist Board (BVITB) organised the event by bringing together Government departments and representatives from the private sector to explore ideas and answer questions regarding a five-star hotel development in the BVI. It precedes a Development Control Forum, which will be held on February 20.

Both events are being held as part of Government's initiative to embark on a national physical development plan for the Territory. The plan, though primarily focused on addressing issues relating to physical development throughout the BVI, will also concentrate on social, economic and environmental issues.
