Jamaica beats Uruguay 2-0 in international friendly

Friday, February 20, 2004

KINGSTON, Jamaica (AFP): Jamaica scored once in each half here Wednesday to beat Uruguay 2-0 in a friendly international football match.

Onandi Lowe opened the scoring for the Reggae Boyz in the 10th minute, and Jermaine Johnson wrapped up the victory in the 81st.

Jamaican goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts also shone, smothering a penalty attempt by Javier Chevanton in the 34th.

Jamaica surprised the visitors with their speed and strength in the first half, with Lowe scoring on a powerful shot from outside the area.

Jamaica had several chances in the second half, Johnson finally capitalizing with the insurance goal when Tyrone Marshall dribbled through the midfield, beating two players. The last defender trying to clear the ball missed, giving Johnson his chance.

Uruguay are preparing to resume play in the South American qualifying for the 2006 World Cup in Germany, while Jamaica will begin their campaign in June when the second round of qualifying in the North and Central American and Caribbean region begins.
