Media talks confirmed for St. Lucia in June

Thursday, February 19, 2004

WASHINGTON, USA: Counterpart International has confirmed St. Lucia as the venue for the sixth Caribbean Media Exchange on Sustainable Tourism (CMEx) from June 24-28, 2004.

Directors of the international non-profit development organisation in Washington DC made the announcement today. The St. Lucia conference follows five other regional media exchanges since October 2001 which gathered regional and international media personnel with tourism experts. The biannual meetings have been held in the Bahamas, Barbados and Jamaica.

CMEx partners will meet in Castries soon to develop the substance for the next meeting which follows the Barbados series in December held under the theme "Tourism and the Media: The Next Generation".

"A highlight of the upcoming meeting in June," says Counterpart President, Lelei LeLaulu, will be our welcoming of eminent St. Lucian hotelier, Berthia Parle to the post of president of the Caribbean Hotel Association (CHA), the inauguration of which takes place in San Juan a week earlier. "This lady is a Caribbean jewel and the industry which enriches so many Caribbean islanders, from farmers to accountants, will be on even stronger ground during her two-year term," he predicted.

St. Lucia's Minister of Tourism, Phillip Pierre said: "Having so many high powered people here along with the media to discuss tourism issues, is one certain way of promoting the industry, if the tourism message is to spread throughout the region and into communities where its value is still not understood or appreciated."

Caribbean and foreign journalists are being offered fellowships to attend the CMEx talks and can apply at: http://www.caribbeanmediaexchange.com/downloads/ by March 15, 2004.
