Dominican Republic arrests two Haitian policemen

Thursday, February 19, 2004

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AFP): Dominican Republic army troops arrested two Haitian policemen who crossed the border after armed rebels attacked their police station in Hinche, a Dominican official said Tuesday.

"We are currently holding two Haitian policemen who were captured yesterday around Elias Pina," a Dominican border town 255 kilometers (158 miles) west of Santo Domingo, General Miguel Soto said.

Monday, armed rebels attacked Hinche's police station, killing the district police chief and two others. Armed men Tuesday claimed to be controlling the town.

Soto, who is secretary of the armed forces, declined to detail reasons for the arrest.

"There was an attack on a police station in the town of Hinche, they killed the police chief, and these two policemen fled and they are under our custody," Soto said.

The Dominican Republic closed its border with Haiti Monday amid the unrest.
