ST. THOMAS, USVI: Barbados successfully defended their Carib Beer title with a match to spare after a resounding victory over the Leeward Islands inside three days in St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands, on Saturday.
Inspired by an unbeaten double century by their vice captain Sherwin Campbell, Barbados romped to victory by an innings and 48 runs to move to 72 points after six consecutive wins. Their nearest rivals Jamaica as well as Trinidad and Tobago are tied on 40 points.
If Barbados wins the final match of this round robin phase of the two- championship tournament they will become the first team to win all of the preliminary matches since the new format was introduced in 1999.
Campbell, a former West Indies vice captain, carried his bat from the start of the innings until he ran out of partners with his score 211, his best performance in any form of first class cricket. His innings provided the foundation for a first innings score of 432. Barbados then dismissed the Leewards for 161 and 223. Left arm fast bowler Pedro Collins was the most successful bowler in the second innings with three for 46.
After the seventh and final round of matches the top four teams in the standings will contest the international shield which was also won by Barbados last year.
