Dominican Republic closes border with Haiti
Tuesday, February 17, 2004
SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AFP): The Dominican Republic closed its border Monday fearing a weeklong rebellion against President Jean Bertrand Aristide could spill over from Haiti.
Several men killed two Dominican soldiers on the weekend, prompting Dominican officials to close the land border with Haiti. The two nations share the Caribbean island of Hispaniola.
Dominicans had previously allowed Haitians, who live in the hemisphere's poorest country, to shop on the Dominican side of the border each Monday and Friday.
"The market has been suspended," Dajabon Governor Casiano Lora said. The extreme northwestern province is where the soldiers were killed.
