Saturday, February 14, 2004
GRAND TURK, Turks & Caicos Islands: American tourist James Stewart had a close shave with death when his single-engine crop-duster plane crashed into the sea off the Grand Turk International Airport around 2:30 p.m. Friday.
A Turks and Caicos Islands police official said Stewart, a native of Arkansas, was approaching the island capital of Grand Turk when the engine malfunctioned and his plane crashed a few hundred yards west of the airport.
A pilot who was flying near Stewart in a separate small plane alerted emergency officials on Grand Turk and within minutes they rushed to the scene in a dive boat. Stewart was taken to hospital where he was treated for minor injuries and discharged.
