Handgun on board jetliner prompts return to Turks & Caicos
Friday, February 13, 2004
MIAMI, USA (AFP): A Miami-bound American Airlines jet reversed course to the Turks and Caicos Islands after a passenger alerted the flight crew Thursday that she had a handgun on board.
An embarrassed Liz Williams, a prominent businesswoman in the Caribbean islands state, told the crew that she had accidentally packed the pistol in her carry-on luggage, according to local television.
She had not been obliged to pass though airport security at Providenciales, according to Channel 7.
Williams had a worried look on her face when she advised the flight crew of the weapon, another passenger told the television network.
The plane returned to Providenciales and arrived in Miami three hours late.
Police did not charge Williams.
