Cuban government fires tourism director
Friday, February 13, 2004
HAVANA, Cuba: The government announced Wednesday that it has fired Tourism Minister Ibrahim Ferradaz and replaced him with a young state company executive to head the sector that has become the nation's top earner of hard currency.
Manuel Marrero Cruz will take over the Tourism Ministry, according to an announcement in the official newspaper Granma.
It gave no reason for the removal of Ferradaz, saying he will be assigned "other responsibilities."
The shakeup comes two months after a scandal rocked state-run Cubanacan, which dominates the island's tourism sector.
Ferradaz was named tourism minister in 1999.
