Trinidad bans US chicken because of bird flu
Friday, February 13, 2004
PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (AFP): Trinidad has announced a ban on chicken from four US states after a second US case of bird flu.
Wednesday's ban on chicken from Delaware, where a case of bird flu was found, also applied to Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Maryland.
The Poultry Farmers Association was concerned the flu could spread to Trinidad's birds, spokesman Robin Phillip said.
He appealed to Prime Minister Patrick Manning's government to stop the flu from reaching the Caribbean country.
This is Trinidad and Tobago's second ban on US foodstuffs, after a mad cow outbreak prompted December's restrictions on US beef.
