Thursday, February 12, 2004
BRIDGETOWN, Barbados: Digicel has added yet another operation to its expanding Caribbean network, with the launch of telecommunications service in Barbados on Wednesday.
With over US$25 million invested to date, a staff of more than 55 Barbadians and 36 retail stores across the island, Digicel rolled out its mobile service to the island's population of 265,000.
Digicel marked its launch with a Freedom Concert, estimated to be one of the largest free concerts ever held in the island, at the Garrison Savannah. The concert featured international rap artiste Busta Rhymes, Machel Montano, John King, Lil Rick and Timmi.
Speaking to the press at a briefing prior to the launch, Chief Executive Officer of Digicel (Barbados) Ltd. Mr. Donal O'Shaughnessy promised Barbadians unbeatable island wide coverage from the day of launch, a wide variety of products and services and 24-hour customer care all year round.
"This launch takes us a step closer to being the premier GSM mobile service provider in the Caribbean," Mr. O'Shaughnessy stated.
Barbadians immediately began to reap the benefits of competition, with Digicel's rate on mobile call costs 50 percent less than its main competitor and a similar rate of saving on international calls.
Digicel's Caribbean operations began with its launch in Jamaica in April 2001. In March 2003 the company added St. Lucia and St. Vincent & The Grenadines, Aruba in July and Grenada in October. The company now has a customer base of over one million subscribers throughout the region.
Digicel is set to launch in the Cayman Islands soon, where it has been licensed to operate as a full service provider of mobile and fixed line telephones and Internet services.
