Canada urges its tourists to stay away from Haiti

Wednesday, February 11, 2004

OTTAWA, Canada (AFP): Canada urged tourists to stay away from Haiti as the Caribbean country plunged deeper into violence pitting armed rebels against government security forces.

"Tourist travel to Haiti should be avoided until further notice," the Foreign Ministry said in a travel advisory.

It said civil and political instability had increased in the country, and demonstrations had led to acts of violence and disorder.

"Criminal activity continues to increase throughout the country, and foreigners have been targeted," the ministry warned. "Personal safety cannot be guaranteed by local authorities."
