Grenada PM welcomes new US Ambassador

Saturday, February 7, 2004

ST GEORGE'S, Grenada: Cooperation in security matters and ways by which the Royal Grenada Police Force can be further strengthened were among the issues when Prime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell welcomed Ambassador for the United States of America to Grenada, Her Excellency Mary Elizabeth Kramer.

Prime Minister Mitchell expressed appreciation for the support provided to Grenada by the USA in the area of security and intelligence sharing, suggesting that there are opportunities to improve upon this cooperation through training, coast guard services and the Community Policing Programme.

The Prime Minister said Grenada is placing greater emphasis on its Community Policing Programme to ensure that Police Officers interact with residents at the village level. While referring to Grenada's Community Policing Programme, the Prime Minister said this is an area for cooperation between the USA and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), making particular reference to the issue of deportees.

Ambassador Kramer welcomed this suggestion from the Prime Minister.

"That is clearly one of our common values, that we can work together," Ambassador Kramer noted.

Other matters addressed during the meeting included educational opportunities and the establishment of the Caribbean as a Centre of Excellence for Connectivity, which is being pursued by the World Bank and CARICOM. A Caribbean Knowledge and Learning Network would connect tertiary institutions in the Region through on line technologies.

Ambassador Kramer expressed interest in this initiative and noted that this is another area of development through which the USA can share expertise with Grenada.

The Ambassador presented her credentials to Governor- General Sir Daniel Williams on Thursday and is participating in the Programme for Visiting Diplomats and Dignitaries to Grenada's 30th Anniversary of Independence.
