WHO to investigate Dominican herbalist's AIDS cure claim

Wednesday, February 4, 2004

ROSEAU, Dominica: Could the cure for AIDS be found in Dominica's forest? One local herbalist thinks so, and the World Health Organisation (WHO) wants to investigate.

The name of the so-called miracle herb remains a mystery, so too is the identity of the herbalist.

Agent for the herbalist, Peter Azille, says his client is jealously guarding the formula until he gets it patented.

Mr. Azille says the man got it in a dream three years ago, began a crusade of finding people with HIV/AIDS, treated them, and It has worked wonders.

The local Sun newspaper, quoted Health Minister Herbert Sabaroche as saying some patients say they have taken the potion, and it has made a difference.

The weekly broke the news here yesterday, reporting that the World Health Organisation has confirmed interest, and is considering assistance to investigate the claim.

An investigating team of doctors and other health professionals, has been set up by the Ministry of Health, as a number of volunteers line up to be part of the experiment.

The news comes at a time when Dominica recorded 23 new HIV/AIDS cases, an usually high number of infections per year locally.

Over one hundred Dominicans have died from AIDS since the deadly virus was discovered here over 15 years ago.
