Monday, February 2, 2004
SYDNEY, Australia: Australians' most popular place to gamble online is a Caribbean casino, according to a survey reported in the Sydney Morning Herald.
While online gaming websites are illegal, except on certain sports betting and lottery sites, about 40 per cent of hits by Australians gambling on the Internet are on illegal overseas casinos and sports betting services.
The average gambling visit lasts only about 11 minutes, but some sites regularly have punters playing for more than two hours.
According to an online research company, Hitwise, nine of the 10 sites keeping gamblers online longest are based overseas. The survey found that Australians' favourite site was Antiguan Casino on Net, at about 11 per cent of gambling site hits.
