Thursday, January 29, 2004
HAMILTON, Bermuda: The appointment of Paula Cox to the post of Bermuda's Finance Minister has been broadly welcomed by the territory's business community.
"Our stability is assured, our fiscal management sound, our country is blessed," said Premier Alex Scott on announcing the appointment of Ms Cox who succeeds her father Eugene Cox.
"This is very good news," enthused David Ezekiel, head of the Association of Bermuda International Companies, according to the Royal Gazette. "Reaction from myself and all my colleagues has been extremely positive. We have experience with her at Home Affairs and Immigration, and I had to do a lot of work with her," he added.
"Certainly from our point of view and from Island's point of view it is a positive development. It is a ministry in pretty good shape. The tax base appears to be still reasonably strong because of the international business sector and has got a strong infrastructure at the Ministry already," noted Mr Ezekiel.
Meanwhile, the Bank of Bermuda, through chief executive officer Henry Smith expressed its "greatest respect for her ability and integrity."
"We have confidence in her ability to assume the very challenging role of Finance Minister," commented Smith, the Royal Gazette reported.
The ensuing cabinet reshuffle means that Ms Cox will vacate the posts of Attorney General and Employment Minster, which have been handed to Larry Mussenden and Terry Lister respectively.
