Jamaica to host Uruguay in friendly

Tuesday, January 27, 2004

KINGSTON, Jamaica (AFP): Jamaica will launch their preparations for the 2006 World Cup qualifying campaign with a friendly against Uruguay on February 18, the Jamaica Football Federation said.

Originally the JFF had sought to tie up China and then the Republic of Ireland for the FIFA-sanctioned date.

But China pulled out and requested that a later date be set. And when it appeared that Ireland were going to fill the slot, the Irish dumped Jamaica for a more high-profile opponent - Brazil.

"We had first wanted to play Ireland on this date, but they decided to play Brazil, so we had to seek another opponent in Uruguay who are now 21 in the FIFA rankings, so we are quite satisfied and pleased with this arrangement," JFF's acting general secretary, Burchell Gibson said.
