CASTRIES, St. Lucia: St. Lucia's Tourism Minister Philip J. Pierre is elated at the news that St. Lucia may be the next venue for the next Caribbean Media Exchange on Sustainable Tourism (CMEx) and looks forward to welcoming the regional media and leading tourism officials to the island in June.
Pierre, who addressed CMEx V at the Almond Beach Village in Barbados last month, says that the more exposure St. Lucia's tourism sector can get, especially from a high profile event like CMEx VI, the greater opportunities there will be to promote the industry.
"Having so many high powered people here along with the media to discuss tourism issues, is one certain way of promoting the industry, if the tourism message has to spread throughout the region and into communities where its value is still not understood or appreciated," Pierre said.
The Minister stressed that the media must play a key role in the exchange of information adding that "it has always been our position here that if the tourism industry is going to be embraced by all, the benefits must accrue to as many people as possible."
He said that the only way this can be passed on is by the media informing the populace as to what's available in tourism, where the industry is going and making them aware that tourism is a competitive industry which had to be dealt with on a worldwide basis.
"I will be exceptionally pleased if CMEx does come to St. Lucia, as this exchange has grown to become a well respected institution which will continue to be a great boost to intra-regional tourism," Pierre stated.
