Friday, January 23, 2004
DES MOINES, USA: Former Iowa Senate President Mary Kramer was sworn in as the United States' ambassador to Barbados Tuesday during a ceremony at the Iowa Capitol.
Ms Kramer left her post in the Iowa Legislature last week, saying one of her top goals in the Caribbean island nation will be doubling tourism.
Ms Kramer, a moderate Republican with close ties to the Bush family, will be based in Barbados but also serve as ambassador of St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada and St. Vincent and the
Grenadines.
Ms Kramer was reportedly an early supporter of President Bush, during his bid for the White House. She also served as vice president of Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield and corporate personnel director for Younkers Inc., and was previously appointed by the President to serve as chairman of the Commission on Presidential Scholars.
A former teacher and school administrator from Des Moines, Ms Kramer earned bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Iowa.
