Beaubrun takes anti-abortion campaign to Dominica

Friday, January 23, 2004

ROSEAU, Dominica: Former St. Lucian Home Affairs Minister Sarah Flood Beaubrun today joined Dominica's National Right to Life Committee in their anti-abortion march and exhibition to mark the 31st anniversary of World Respect Life Day here.

Beaubrun lost her job as a minister last week after she called her Cabinet colleagues killers for their support for amendments to St. Lucia's abortion laws last December.

Beaubrun described the new law as promoting abortion on demand and all that it takes is ''pick your date and pick your time'' with no facts of the rape needed.

''It simply say you must report it and it doesn't say you must give the facts of the rape, it simply says the date and time it happened, so you can pick your date and pick your time and that an investigation is underway, and she goes to the doctor with it and she gets an abortion, I say that's abortion on demand,'' she lamented.

Dr. Kenny Anthony, the St Lucian Prime Minister who fired Beaubrun, said abortion on demand is still illegal in the country and only victims of rape and incest had a choice of terminating pregnancy.

''Abortion on demand is still illegal in St. Lucia, and for an abortion to take place in the instance of rape or incest two doctors must certify that abortion'' Dr. Anthony noted while here for the funeral of the late Dominican Prime Minister Pierre Charles last weekend.

The local committee said it is firmly endorsing the stand taken by the now backbencher in the St Lucian parliament.
