Tuesday, January 20, 2004
MIAMI, USA: Miami-Dade police boarded a Caribbean-bound airplane at Miami International Airport on Saturday and arrested a suspected double murderer moments before the flight's takeoff.
According to a report by the Miami Herald, on Sunday morning, the 26-year-old Turks & Caicos native led detectives to a wooded area off Interstate 75 where, police said, he had fatally shot his estranged girlfriend after having killed the girlfriend's mother.
The girlfriend's 4-year-old daughter was found unharmed in a parked car at the airport. Police say she may have witnessed both killings.
Jason Siere Nelson was pulled from his seat aboard an American Airlines flight bound for the Turks and Caicos Islands. He was charged with first-degree murder, kidnapping and child neglect.
Miami-Dade Police were following a tip from Department of Homeland Security agents stationed at MIA, Detective John Butchko said. ''They got a tip from somebody that he was getting on the plane and he was heading for the islands,'' Butchko said.
Police said the plane almost took off with Nelson aboard.
"It was about to leave," Butchko said. "It was about to pull away from the ramp.''
Immediately after he was taken into custody, Nelson led police to the 4-year-old.
Police said Nelson had purchased a ticket to his home country in advance of the alleged double murder.
