Chile seeks support from Antigua-Barbuda for OAS nominee

Tuesday, January 20, 2004

ST. JOHN'S: Antigua: Antigua and Barbuda's Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Lester B. Bird, received the Ambassador of Chile and Special Envoy of the Chilean President, Emilio Prado at the office of the Prime Minister on Monday. The Chilean envoy is visiting Antigua to seek Antigua and Barbuda's support for the Chilean nominee for the post of Secretary General to the OAS.

"Chile is a good friend of Antigua and Barbuda," the Prime Minister remarked, "and so I felt compelled to receive the President's envoy though the CARICOM took a decision to support the Costa Rican candidate for the post of OAS Secretary General," he concluded.

Prime Minister Bird promised to have Antigua and Barbuda's delegation raise the matter at the OECS Heads meeting, next week. He also indicated to the Chilean envoy that every effort would be made to give the Chilean Government the same opportunity that was extended to the Costa Rican government.

The Chilean Ambassador left the Prime Minister's office very pleased and noted that he received even more than he had anticipated. "Antigua and Barbuda has always been very friendly to Chile, and we continue to value your friendship highly," Ambassador Prado commented.

Ambassador Prado leaves Antigua for Trinidad this afternoon, Monday, and then flies on to Guyana on Wednesday. He is stationed in Jamaica
