Former Haitian general arrested in Florida on rights abuse charges
Friday, January 16, 2004
MIAMI, USA (AFP): A former Haitian general, Jean-Claude Duperval, is facing deportation following his arrest in Orlando, Florida, on grounds he was involved in a 1994 massacre in his impoverished Caribbean state, US judicial
sources said Thursday.
Duperval, convicted in absentia of the slayings of 26 opposition members at Raboteau, north of Haiti's capital Port-au-Prince, was arrested Wednesday, said Ana Santiago, the Homeland Security Department's Miami spokeswoman.
The former general had lived in the United States for nine years, according to The Miami Herald.
At least three other Haitians, Carl Dorelien, Herbert Valmond and Luc Roger Asmath, also suspected in the Raboteau slayings, have been arrested and deported in the past few months.
Another suspect, Frantz Douby, was arrested in Miami in last August and is awaiting deportation.
