US repatriates 255 Dominican Republic immigrants
Thursday, January 15, 2004
MIAMI, USA (AFP): The US Coast Guard said Tuesday it had repatriated 255 Dominican immigrants intercepted at sea who were trying to get to the US territory of Puerto Rico in different groups.
The immigrants had been pulled from the ocean since last Wednesday. They were kept on four boats off the Puerto Rican coast before being returned to the Dominican Republic. One Cuban was also picked up in the sweep.
Over 1,600 Dominicans were intercepted at sea and repatriated during 2003, according to the US Coast Guard.
The Dominican Republic and the island of Puerto Rico are separated by a narrow stretch of ocean, the Mona Passage, whose waters are considered treacherous.
