Montserrat clarifies terms of US meat ban

Thursday, January 15, 2004

BRADES, Montserrat (GIU): The Montserrat Department of Agriculture has moved quickly in providing some additional information on the banning of beef from the United States.

In an earlier release the Department stated that the Government of Montserrat had banned all meat and meat products from the USA due the discovery of BSE or mad cow disease. The ban included all meat and meat products from the U.S.A. including beef, pork and mutton originating in North America.

But according to a report carried on Radio Montserrat Tuesday, the Department said the ban on the importation of animals and animal products from the USA has now been restricted to cattle only.

As a result, all beef products originating in the USA are banned from entry into Montserrat.

Importers and travellers are being asked to take note and to act accordingly.
