St Lucian cabinet minister fired from her post

Mrs. Sarah Flood-Beaubrun

Tuesday, January 13, 2004

CASTRIES, St Lucia: The Minister for Gender Relations Mrs. Sarah Flood-Beaubrun has been fired from her ministerial position in a cabinet reshuffle announced Sunday night by Prime Minister Dr. Kenny Anthony in an address to the nation broadcast on radio and television.

In giving reasons for relieving Mrs. Flood-Beaubrun from her ministerial responsibilities, the Prime Minister in his 40 minute address said, " the principles of collective responsibility are enshrined in our constitution and there is no room for insult, disrespect, invective no matter how powerful the passion and conviction one holds. If there is no respect for and among colleges then collective responsibly will not survive.".

This cabinet re-shuffle will take effect Monday January 12,2004

During the debate in the house of assembly last year, on the new criminal code bill, Mrs. Flood- Beaubrun referred to her colleagues as "child killers and murderers " and voted against the passage of the bill which contained an amendment to the Abortion Act.

The ironic situation in all of this is that the fired minister was critical of government's abortion stance during a period when she was pregnant with her first child.

At the time she said she would rather be fired than support her own government colleagues on abortion.
