Dominica's new prime minister to name Cabinet

Dominica's new Prime Minister, Mr
Roosevelt Skerrit
Friday, January 9, 2004
ROSEAU, Dominica (AFP): Shortly after he took the oath of office as Dominica's youngest Prime Minister Thursday, Roosevelt Skerrit said he will announce his Cabinet in under 24 hours.
Skerrit, 31, took the oath of office before President Nicholas Liverpool, succeeding Pierre Charles, who died from a suspected heart attack on Tuesday in this former British colony of some 76,000 people.
Skerrit was the Education and Youth Affairs Minister in the Charles administration.
His appointment came after hours of tense meetings among senior members of the ruling Dominica Labour Party.
Charles suffered declining health since taking office in October 2000.
In February 2003, he underwent angioplasty in Trinidad after complaining of chest pains during a summit of Caribbean leaders there. That procedure was performed again in the United States in August to further clear his coronary artery.
Charles was the political leader of the DLP and succeeded prime minister Roosevelt Douglas.
