
New York mayor to visit Haiti, Jamaica

NEW YORK, USA (AFP): New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg will visit Haiti and Jamaica over the weekend, his office announced Wednesday.
New York is home to a large number of Haitian and Jamaican immigrants.
In the Haitian capital of Port au Prince, Bloomberg is to take flowers to a statue honoring Jean-Jacques Dessalines, a hero in the war of independence 200 years ago.
He is also scheduled to meet US ambassador James Foley and members of the business community, and he will visit a clinic that specializes in treating AIDS patients.
In Kingston, Bloomberg is scheduled to meet Jamaican Governor General Howard Cooke, the mayor of Kingston and various business and political officials.
According to the mayor's office, there are some 300,000 New Yorkers of Haitian descent, and 500,000 of Jamaican descent.
