Tanya Streeter to appear on National Geographic
Wednesday, January 7, 2004
AUSTIN, USA: National Geographic On Assignment, hosted by Laura Greene, will feature a half hour special on Tanya Streeter on January 12th 2004.
Tanya, who is originally from the Cayman Islands, has been at the forefront of the sport of freediving for a number of years and is the only female athlete in sports history to have broken a man's world record.
With the recent success of her World Records in 2002 and 2003 that took place in the Turks and Caicos Islands, appearances on primetime American and British television networks have boosted Tanya's public profile tremendously.
Tanya, Laura and the crew spent three days together in Austin, Texas in December catching up on life after Tanya's most recent world record. Tanya was filmed in the gym and pool showing what her training was like in preparation for the record dive. Tanya spent time with Laura in the pool, teaching her some of the essential breathing and Static Apnea techniques that are required to be able to plunge into the oceans depths.
Filming was concluded at the University of Texas where Tanya was giving a short presentation to Geology students who are currently studying the importance of coral reefs, something that is close to Tanya's heart with her connection with the Coral Reef Alliance
www.coral.org . Tanya was able to talk about the "Power of One" and her individual effort to raise awareness for the importance and plights of global coral reef systems.
Tanya will also appear on NBC Dateline in the near future. The NBC crew followed Tanya on location in Turks and Caicos over the events leading up to and over her world record attempt. Recently a major 2 page feature was run in the Sunday Times newspaper in the UK following Tanya's nomination for 2 awards at the Sunday Times Sportswoman of the Year Awards.
Tanya has also hosted a freediving documentary for a new cable channel in the USA called Rush TV and was Tanya's first venture into program hosting, but not her last as she is lined up to host a number of programs for Discovery and the BBC.
