Dominican government to relocate families after landslide
Wednesday, January 7, 2004
ROSEAU, Dominica: The government of Dominica has assured residents of Bellevue Chopin that government will take action to prevent further loss of lives in the aftermath of last month's landslide disaster.
The people of the southern community have been calling for urgent intervention from government to relocate several families who face the danger of becoming victims to landslides in the area.
A team of government officials and technicians discussed the issue of relocation with the people.
Chairman of the Bellevue Chopin Village Council Fitzroy Registe hailed the meeting with government as very good and he remained confident that the matter will be addressed in a timely manner.
He added that the talks led him to believe that both parties were heading in the right direction of offering alternative housing lands for Bellevue Chopin residents who live near the recent landslide that claimed two lives.
The Council has been requesting that lands be made available to over two dozen families who are living in a danger of slides.
