One dead, seven wounded in Haiti in rebel attack

Sunday, January 4, 2004

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AFP): One person was killed and seven others wounded late Friday in a firefight between government opponents and Haitian police, according to eyewitnesses.

The fatality occurred when a man was shot by police during a firefight with members of the anti-government Artibonite Revolutionary Resistance Front, witnesses said.

All seven of the injured were also anti-government rebels witnesses said.

The rebels, once close to President Jean Bertrand Aristide, have turned against him after the assassination of their leader, Amiot Metayer, in September and now seek Aristide's ouster.

Haiti has been rocked by violence since celebrations earlier this week to mark the 200 years of Haitian independence from France.

The latest violence brings the toll to 37 dead and 92 wounded since late September
