Indians in Guyana want 'arrival day' to be made public holiday
Sunday, January 4, 2004
PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad: The Indian community in Guyana wants May 5 to be declared a public holiday to mark the arrival of Indians to the Caribbean nation 166 years ago.
According to a report in the Hindustan Times, Guyana Indian Heritage Association (GIHA) president Ryhaan Shah said that her group has made a formal submission to the National Holiday Committee to declare May 5 or the 'Indian Arrival Day' as a national holiday.
In a letter to the committee, GIHA said a public holiday would honour and recognise the vital role that Guyana's Indian community has played in the country's development.
It also pointed out that Indians in Trinidad and Tobago already enjoy this "well-deserved" national recognition that Indians in Guyana are still striving for.
