Antigua Labour Party is on the road to victory says PM Bird

Sunday, January 4, 2004

ST. JOHN'S, Antigua: Prime Minister, Lester Bird, says his ruling Antigua Labour Party (ALP) is on the road to victory come the next general election, constitutionally due by March this year.

"We tested the party's popularity with a whistle stop last year when we celebrated our 4th year of the present five-year term and the support was overwhelming. The people of Antigua and Barbuda have clearly demonstrated that they have an unshakable confidence in the Labour Party Government," he said adding that, the people of Barbuda have clearly demonstrated that they fully support the coalition formed by the ALP and the Barbuda Peoples Movement for Change (BPMC).

He said this was evident during a special rally on Boxing Day to launch Mr. Arthur Nibbs as the ALP/BPMC Candidate for Barbuda.

Mr. Bird noted that within recent times there has been the concocted results of the Casuro Poll which is, in itself, pure nonsense. "

"In fact, I have spoken to this already and you will recall that people who conducted the poll themselves had to come clean and admit that they were wrong in some instances. We in the Antigua Labour Party therefore see this as a clear example of the folly in the Casuro poll," he said.

"Quite recently the Public Information Division (PID) released the year 2003 in pictures. This, I understand, is a yearly pictorial of completed government and private sector projects for the year. When one looks at the amount of development that has taken place in our country for the past year, notwithstanding our financial set backs, there is strong evidence that our nation has done well under the present ALP Government. Our track record speaks for itself," Mr. Bird said.

The party leader is of the view that with such a track record, the ALP is clearly set to win the next general election.
