Guyanese respond to New Year's text messages from President

Saturday, January 3, 2004

GEORGETOWN, Guyana: Guyanese welcomed a text message sent all mobile users conveying best wishes for the New Year by President Bharrat Jagdeo and First Lady Varshnie Jagdeo.

"The message read "A Happy and Prosperous New Year to you and your family from President Bharrat Jagdeo and the First Lady."

Here is how some Guyanese reacted to this goodwill gesture:

"It was a real nice gesture. I have never seen it done before and it is really nice to have somebody come up with a creative thought and I think that really capture the hearts and minds of Guyanese especially at a time like this when we have high crime. It really shows concerns. His gesture really tells a lot," one man said.

According to Lolita Singh, "it was very nice and it shows his concern for his people. It was quite interesting and nice, especially to wake up to it."

Maxwell Thom Manager of Wireless Connections said, "it was a pleasant surprise. It was thoughtful of him and I hope that they continue to do things like that."

"It was good because it was the first text message I got for the New Year," Raymond Sattuar said.

"The President actually sent us a message on our telephone for the holidays and I must compliment him for that," Gordon Williams noted.

"It was a good gesture on the President's behalf," a man said.

Internet users, including Shavane Sullivan, said it was very thoughtful of the President to send the messages.
