Britons held on drug charges in Jamaica denied bail

Thursday, January 1, 2004

MONTEGO BAY, Jamaica (AFP): Two British men accused of trying to smuggle nearly 160 pounds (72 kgs) of marijuana out of Jamaica will spend New Year's in jail after they were denied bail here Wednesday.

Ian Frazer and Malcolm Foster, both of London, appeared in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrates Court on charges of trying to smuggle the marijuana out of the country on Tuesday.

Police allege the men were in line to board a My Travel charter flight to Gatwick at the Sangster International airport in Montego Bay when their suitcases were searched and the drugs found.

Frazer, a 32-year-old meter reader with a Peckham address, was allegedly held with 53 pounds (24 kgs) of the drug while 37-year-old Foster, a service engineer who police said refused to give out any personal information, was allegedly held with 105 pounds.

The attorney for the two men, George Thomas, denied the allegations, saying the bags were not found on his clients and there were no evidence to connect them with the drug find.

Resident Magistrate Evan Brown denied their bail application and ordered the men remanded to custody for court appearance on January 21.
