
ICARE votes Tanya Streeter best female freediver for 2003

GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands: ICARE - the International Center for Apnea Recognition and Education, based in Switzerland, recently voted Tanya Streeter as the best female freediver for 2003. Tanya, who is originally from the Cayman Islands, has been at the forefront of the sport of freediving for a number of years and is the only female athlete in sports history to have broken a man's world record.
With the recent success of her World Records in 2002 and 2003 that took place in the Turks and Caicos Islands, Tanya's public profile has been boosted tremendously by appearances on primetime American and British television networks. Tanya recently appeared on the Discovery Channel's "More than Human" and will have programs on NBC Dateline and National Geographic in the near future. 2004 promises to be an exciting year for Tanya with TV presenting roles already signed up with Discovery and the BBC.
Every year ICARE issues awards to a prominent individuals and organizations to recognize the efforts in promoting the sport of freediving. Recipients can be nominated throughout the year and the top 4 nominations are then taken to election by the board of ICARE. The number of nominations counts for 50% of the vote and the remainder is by the board.
Tanya commented, "I am thrilled and honor to be recognized by others in the sport and its nice to know that our efforts in promoting freediving in a safe and professional manner and the promotion of good ocean ethic do not go un-noticed".
