Frozen stowaway found on Jamaica-JFK flight

Saturday, December 27, 2003

NEW YORK, USA (UPI): Authorities say a stowaway aboard an American Airlines jet was found frozen to death in the plane's wheel well at Kennedy Airport.

The unidentified 25-year-old man was found on Christmas Eve by maintenance workers during an overnight aircraft inspection, the New York Daily News said.

Investigators believe the man may have been hiding in the belly of the A300 Airbus jet for several days, and that he probably sneaked aboard long before Flight 1190 departed from Montego Bay, Jamaica, early Wednesday.

The discovery of the body raises further concern over airline security, and adds to terrorism fears with the nation in orange alert.

"We'll follow up with a thorough investigation internally to determine the exact circumstances around this event," said Carlo Bertolini, a spokesman for American Airlines. "We're obviously committed to security, and we'll investigate this situation thoroughly."
