Popular German TV program to broadcast history, culture and beauty of USVI

US VIRGIN ISLANDS: A television film crew from Germany has wrapped up a successful filming project in the U.S. Virgin Islands.

ARD/German Television, the first noncommercial television channel in Germany, has been filming in the USVI since the beginning of December. The crew visited all three islands as part of the documentary style program, "Weltreisen," or "World Travels." The popular travel program, which is 30 minutes in length, airs on Sunday afternoons and is seen by nearly three million viewers in Germany and neighboring countries. In addition to the 30-minute program, ARD also will air a 45-minute version of the documentary on Sunday evenings. 

"The Department of Tourism is pleased to have had the opportunity to work with such a well-known international television company," Commissioner of Tourism Pamela C. Richards said. "Programs like this portray so much more than the beautiful landscapes of our islands. The overall value of broadcasting the warm culture and heritage of St. Croix, St. John and St. Thomas is immeasurable."

The crew worked diligently to portray the people and the beautiful landscapes of the territory. With a focus on the history and culture of St. Croix, St. John and St. Thomas, the crew sought out the assistance of local bands, dancers, mocko jumbies, eco-tour providers, craftspeople, National Park staff, representatives from the Cruzan Rum Factory and many others. In addition, the crew featured watersports in the islands, including snorkeling and sailing, as well as land-based activities like shopping and sightseeing. The programs that will result from the current filming are set to air in Germany beginning on January 18, 2004, and will be seen several times thereafter.
