ROSEAU, Dominica: The General Secretary of the Dominica Public Service Union (DPSU), Thomas Letang, was Monday named as The Sun newspaper's Person of the Year for 2003.
The weekly newspaper cited Letang's defiant stand against harsh economic measures impose by government despite a large number of DPSU members devoting their allegiance to political parties at the expense of their organisation.
The Sun reported that Letang fought hard for his members most of whom it claimed chose to ally with the coalition administration of the Dominica Labour Party (DLP) and the Dominica Freedom Party (DFP) instead of rallying behind the DPSU in its struggles with government over reduction in wages.
The DPSU and the government have been bitter enemies over the measures in the current economic stabilisation and adjustment programme that resulted in an eight per cent reduction of wages of public workers.
