Sarwan builds West Indies lead

Sunday, December 21, 2003

EAST LONDON, South Africa: An unbeaten half-century by Ramnaresh Sarwan put West Indies on course for a commanding lead after two days of their four-day tour match against Border on Saturday.

Sarwan was 71 not out as West Indies reached 3 for 168 in their second innings, 195 ahead, when bad light ended play early.

Sarwan, who opened the innings, batted for three and a half hours, faced 118 balls and hit 13 fours.

Earlier Border, resuming on 2 for 68 after West Indies first innings of 278, lost wickets regularly before being dismissed midway through the afternoon.

Fast bowler Adam Sanford, finding seam movement, took 5 for 53. Leg-spinner Dave Mohammed took 3 for 89 from 17 overs.

The home side's only significant stand was the 81 runs Pieter Strydom and Andile Sudomo shared for the seventh wicket. Strydom top-scored with 74.
