Grenada government provides $5 million for nutmeg farmers

Saturday, December 20, 2003

ST GEORGE'S, Grenada: The Government of Grenada has come to the rescue of nutmeg farmers with a year-end payment of $5 million.

Arrangements had been made by the Ministry of Finance to disburse $5 million to the Grenada Cooperative Nutmeg Association (GCNA) Friday.

This is in keeping with a decision taken at a special Cabinet meeting on Thursday.

Government is mindful of the tradition that nutmeg farmers receive monies in December, and in light of the inability of the GCNA to provide the payment, Cabinet took the decision on behalf of the farmers.

Minister of Agriculture Gregory Bowen was expected to make the announcement of the payment at the Annual General Meeting of the GCNA Friday, which will be welcomed by farmers and their families at this Christmas time.
