ROSEAU, Dominica: Officials of the Ross University School of Medicine in Dominica have issued a public statement to clarify its position on proposed residence halls for more than 400 students expected here in 2005.
The 25-year-old university, which specialises in medical sciences, said the new housing facility would cater for students who may have concerns about living outside campus.
Presently, about one thousand international students have been renting private residences in the island's second main town of Portsmouth and neigbouring villages amid security concerns.
Portsmouth Town Council and landlords in that community have called on government to keep the provision of housing for the university in private hands.
There have been several attempts in the past by past administrations of the university to construct on-site dormitories for its students who come mainly from the United States.
The new United States based owners DeVry University is currently seeking a government permit to provide housing for its new medical students in the northern community that lies 30 miles north of the capital Roseau.
