Public sector union upset with Dominica government plans

ROSEAU, Dominica: The Dominica Public Service Union (DPSU) said it is unhappy with the government's plan to retrench over 30 daily paid workers of the Ministry of Agriculture, beginning January 1.

The union's boss Thomas Letang said it is unfair for people earning about US$400 per fortnight to have to bear the worst of the economic hardship in the country.

The DPSU said it will write to the government to express its disapproval of firing of the workers, most of whom are employed at the Botanic Gardens, a tourist attraction in the capital, and Agricultural Stations island-wide.

The body representing the interests of public officers said it has rejected government's offer of US$5,500 to the organisation's Credit Unionette.

The rejection of the government's offer came last weekend as the unionists met to discuss the ongoing salary negotiations between the two sides.

The DPSU solicited a financial contribution from the state in light of a freeze in salary increases for public officers due to the economic situation in the country.
