Haiti's education minister submits resignation
Thursday, December 11, 2003
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AFP): Education Minister Marie Carmel Austin resigned Wednesday, days after armed supporters of Haitian President Jean Bertrand Aristide attacked a group of university students and professors, officials said.
Cabinet chief of staff Lionel Laviolette said Austin had announced her resignation in a letter to Aristide but will continue to perform her job until Friday. She had called the attack "revolting."
The resignation follows Friday's clashes between university students and faculty and Aristide supporters, in which 25 people, mostly students, were injured.
Haiti University president Pierre Marie Paquiot had both of his legs broken in the attack.
