ST GEORGE'S, Grenada: The Oaths of Office and Allegiance were administered by Governor General Sir Daniel Williams to newly appointed Senators and Ministers of the Government of Grenada during a swearing-in ceremony Wednesday at the Governor General's Residence.
Prime Minister Keith Mitchell, who was sworn in as Prime Minister on Saturday, is now also Minister of National Security, Information, Human Resource Development, Youth Development, Business and Private Sector Development, as well as Information Communication Technology (ICT).
In commenting on the new Cabinet, Prime Minister Mitchell thanked the people of Grenada for their "faith and confidence in me and the New National Party (NNP) team and for giving us an unprecedented third Term to govern the affairs of the Country."
Prime Minister Mitchell said the composition of the Cabinet reflects the fact that the NNP recognises the concerns of the electorate, particularly with respect to Youth Development. One of the new faces in the Cabinet is 28-year-old Emmalin Pierre, former Assistant Coordinator of Youth.
The other area the Prime Minister identified by the electorate that requires more direction is agriculture. One of the resulting changes is that the Marketing and National Importing Board now falls under the Ministry of Agriculture, instead of the Ministry of Finance.
"The results sent a clear message. I believe the NNP and myself have heard this message, very seriously so," he said.
The Prime Minister took the opportunity to congratulate the National Democratic Congress (NDC) on the success attained at polls in the November 27th General Election.
"The results of the election demonstrate that democracy is alive and well in Grenada," the Prime Minister said, adding that he is looking forward to exciting debates in the Houses of Parliament.
Prime Minister Mitchell said it is also important to note that the NNP had governed "reasonably well" with eight seats in the past, while this time the team is much stronger.
Observing that the NNP has three women elected to the House of Representatives and three women appointed to the Senate, while the NDC has one woman elected to the House, the Prime Minister took the liberty of making a prediction regarding the make-up of Grenada's Parliament.
"Assuming the Opposition will appoint at least one woman to the Senate, Grenada could end up with the highest proportion of women in Parliament in the entire Commonwealth," the Prime Minister predicted.
Appointments to the Senate comprised Brenda Hood, Adrian Mitchell, Ann David Antoine, Einstein Louison, Emmalin Pierre and Nigel Stewart.
New portfolios include Business and Private Sector Development and the Performing Arts.
