Saba police station an 'embarrassment'

THE BOTTOM, Saba: The police station, located on the main road leading to the capital, has been described as an embarrassment to the people of Saba and the holding cells not fit for people to be locked up in. The police station suffered some damages during the last two major hurricanes but, according to local reports, nothing has been done by the Central Government to try and repair the building.

During the visit of the Prime Minister of the Netherlands Antilles to the police station and holding cells and after seeing the state of the cells Commissioner Lisa Hassell said that they were not equipped to have people locked up in. 

Several weeks ago Commissioner Hassell instructed the Department of Public Works and the Sanitation Department to carry out some upgrading and cleaning of the police holding cells. The Sanitation Department removed several items that needed to be dumped and the Department of Public Works sent in a team to repair toilets and bathrooms, and also to have the cells painted.

The repairs to the building are presently being looked into by the Minister of Justice, Mr. Ben Komproe, and also by the Prime Minister of the Netherlands Antilles. Minister Komproe has made some commitments that he will do his utmost best to bring about the many repairs that the building needs to receive in order for the police officers to be able to carry out their duties in a good building. 

During the visit of the Minister of Justice he give the approval to have the Police Station removed to a building adjacent to the Police Station, but the removing has not started and it is not expected to start before the end of the month.
